| May 27, 2008 | | The season hits its stride | Now the season is underway, and the great weather is making riders come out of the winter doldrums. A lot needs to happen to avoid an accident. Getting used to riding under all conditions takes a little time, and concentration is a plus.
Once again, my usual recommendations. Find a parking lot to practice in. Practice braking at various speeds. Work up slowly to a hard stop from a decent speed. Practice low speed manuevers. Read a book on motorcycle safety. Take an MSF course.
There are plenty of uninsured and underinsured motorists out there. Lots of cars waiting to cut in front of you at an intersection. Many motorists who will run red lights and stop signs. Some who will cut into your lane.
Defensive driving doesn't begin to describe it. Much more is required. At least get your riding skills in shape, so that you can concentrate on avoiding an accident.
