| September 22, 2009 | | Difficult to Avoid | A news item from Casper Wyoming shows once again how difficult it is for a motorcyclist to avoid a left hand turning vehicle.
Calvin Hall, a motorcyclist, has been a safety advocate for riders. He lost a friend to a left hand turn accident, when the friend was killed.
Mr. Hall was recently put in the hospital by a bus making a left hand turn.
If you are wondering how anyone could fail to see a bus, that isn't how this collision occurred. The bus actually hit the back of the motorcycle as Mr. Hall went through the intersection.
These crashes are very difficult to avoid, for a lot of reasons that are discussed regularly on this blog. No matter how conspicuous the motorcycle is, no matter what the conditions, the driver of the left turning vehicle simply must pay attention. It is the failure to pay attention that is so dangerous to riders.
