| | | September 02, 2009 | | Details Slowly Leaking | With painfully slow leaking of details, Honda continues to build hype for their 1200 VFR, which they will undoubtedly tout as the best street motorcycle available.
One site reports that the variable cylinder system will not just toggle between two and four cylinders, but will have an intermediate 3 cylinder mode. Other sites report all kinds of transmission variations - from essentially an automatic, to a double clutch manual that anticipates the next shift. An air bag gets mentioned repeatedly.
Interesting, that there is so little data on how an airbag performs on a motorcycle. Does it really reduce injuries? How does it affect the movement of the rider in a crash? I know that in certain types of crashes between a motorcyle and a car (many of the infamous left hand turning car cuts off motorcycle crashes), the rider goes up and over the car. Now, the rider will presumably hit the airbag. What then?
It is unclear whether or not there will be a "T" model, for touring. That model would have a little more bodywork, incorporate bags, and who knows what else.
Clearly this is Honda's return to their corporate goal of having the "best" bike in every category. For me personally, race heritage is always a draw, and so is that indefinable brand personality that Triumph and BMW excel at.
I'm going to make an attempt to ignore this motorcycle from now until the full details are really known.
