| January 20, 2009 | | Faster, more manuerverable cars may be leading to more aggressive driving. | | I like your point about faster, maneuverable cars. Car drivers have gotten a lot more aggressive in the past ten years. A few years ago, I bought a Toyota Corolla to commute to work in, and was fairly shocked at the performance given its a four-banger. I think this encourages drivers to try and beat motorcyclists (and other cars for that matter) on the left hand turn. Besides that there is a lot more tailgating, get out of my way attitude by car drivers which has to be leading to more accidents and motorcycle fatalities. At the very least more traffic enforcement is needed. Maybe all left turning lanes at traffic lights should be turn on green arrow only. Also I think rider education has to be a factor. The left hand turning car is always a problem, but a large share of motorcycle fatalities continue to be single-vehicle accidents indicating many motorcyclists haven't taken time to practice or get properly trained. | | |
