| February 25, 2008 | | 90 Per Cent of Motorcycles Could Need Fluid Replacement | BIKE, the incomparable cheeky British motorcycle mag, has a tremendous amount of great content in the latest issue. Articles on burning calories by riding, even at a slow pace, keeping yourself happy by riding, and so forth.
They have a truly interesting piece on brakes. Four pot calipers are better than six, stuff like that.
One of the easily overlooked little items was in an article of brake factoids. A racing school found that over 90% of the bikes they checked had enough water in the brake fluid to be potentially hazardous to the braking.
As you know, the fluid gets hot when brakes are used hard, and it breaks down. A standard service item at some point is to drain and replace the fluid. It sometimes seems extreme and unnecessary. Apparently, it is neither.
I don't consider this to be simply a track issue. Brakes get hot on any twisty stretch. Mountains tend to do the same thing.
Given the importance of brakes, this is the item of the year.
