Good News, Bad News, or Something Else

Wheelies at 80-100 MPH
Once again the wagons are circling, this time aimed at the seemingly reckless riders who do stunts in traffic.

The concensus is that stuntahs are dangerous as they look, doing wheelies at 80-100 mph in traffic, and other acts guaranteed to piss off the motoring public even more.

I admit that it looks really dangerous, and that there is little doubt this does not help our image as a sport.  Given that this stuff is usually also associated with obnoxious high speed in traffic, and often coupled with buzzing cars while lane splitting, it can't be good for us as a group.

That said, I'm not sure that it is as dangerous as it looks.  After all, someone who can repeatedly wheelie a bike at 80-100 mph in traffic is not usually learning how to do it.  My guess is that these riders are pretty experienced at these stunts.

While it may be obnoxious to some, and while it certainly doesn't help our image as riders, my guess is that the danger (at least of the wheelie-type stunts) is somewhat overrated.  Again, this presumes that we are talking about an experienced wheelie artist.  Of course, for someone learning to wheelie in traffic, the conclusion would be quite different.

I'm not advocating stunts in traffic, just making an observation.
