Groin Injuries Revisited

No One Wants to Talk About It

    The Hurt report says more than 13% of motorcycle accidents involve groin injuries. My guess is that for accidents that involve other vehicles cutting off the motorcyclist, the number is much higher.

    There is no protective gear that I am aware of, and the manufacturers don't seem to be designing with this problem in mind.

    Nonetheless, for a motorcyle going 25 mph or more at the time of impact, stopping by hitting your groin on the gas tank as the bike stops dead on the side of a vehicle is a recipe for a bad injury. Worse, for a motorcycle going faster than that, some kind of fracture of the pelvis is predictable. Likewise, this seems to be related to hip injuries.

    I don't know what to do about it, but I certainly hope this becomes a factor for the motorcycle safety investigation that is seeing a resurgence.
