Some motorcycles give the same ambience as a well broken in pair of jeans. You know what I'm talking about - those bikes that you love to just get on, even if you're only going to the store. One of the identifiable characteristics of these bikes is the right seat height. If the seat height is too low, the knees are uncomfortable, and this leads to discomfort higher up. If the seat height is too high, there is always a sense of impending problems if there is a need to put both feet on the ground. The seat height also affects where the shoulders are, and in turn this affects how the hands sit on the bars. A bike always handles better and adapts to the road best if the elbows are bent at 90 degrees. It's not that you can't adjust the bar height independently, its that if the seat height is correct for the bars, and also right for the ground and pegs, EVERYTHING is right. How does that feel? You tell me. OK - so now that we've established that we all love bikes with the correct seat height, how come dirt bikes with high seats are so much fun to ride? Different set of parameters for a bike that needs a lot of suspension travel for jumping and dealing with ruts. However, even though the seat may be higher, the relationship to the pegs and bars still needs to be right for the rider to feel comfortable and in control. On either a streetbike or for off road, feeling comfortable and in control means better riding. |
