British Study Identifies Cars Most Likely to Hit Bikes

Mostly small cars involved, not sports cars

A British Study reported in BIKE identifies the worst hazards to motorcycles.

In reviewing the group of high risk cars, it seemed that most of them were small economy cars.  There were no high performance or sports cars in the top ranks.

It took only a second to realize, that these are the kind of cars that are fun to drive, because they can be whipped in and out of traffic in a flash, which, I would speculate, results in a driving style involving lane changes with minimal attempts to look before darting, and probably also these cars try to stick themselves into traffic at intersections without too much warning.

Honestly, in my own experience as a San Francisco Motorcycle Lawyer, this does not fully comport with what I see in the cases that come through my web site at www.Michaelpadway.com.  Or at least not exactly.

Honestly, I have to say that a more typical American accident seems to involve a pickup truck, or a soccer mom in an SUV.

An argument could be made that this difference from the British experience reflects the number of trucks and SUV's on American roads.  It is equally likely that here, a driver who dashes around without looking carefully before making a lane change or entering an intersection is most likely to be driving an SUV, whereas in Europe, that type of driver is more likely in an economy car.

As always, no point in speculating.  I will try to keep an eye out for follow up descriptions that help identify the offending drivers as a group.
