In 2003, 28 Myrtle Beach restaurants, including Greg Norman's Austrailian Grill, closed for a Black motorcycle week that preceeds a predominantly while Harley Davidson event. New reports say that Damon's Grill has agreed to pay $125,000 and to join the other restaurants in agreeing to treat the black bikers the same way they treat the mostly white Harley riders. The city of Myrtle Beach also had different traffic rules for the Black bikers, with certain streets one way for them, but two way for the Harley group. Hundreds of thousands of riders attended the two events. What is interesting is that the settlement does not require the restaurants to stop discriminating against the two groups, but only to do so equally so as not to discriminate on the basis of race. I have to wonder if they will now simply close the area to both riding groups. Given that Myrtle beach is a major riding destination, I hope that the American Motorcycle Association will get interested in this, if they aren't already involved. |
