Traversing across Wisconsin’s county roads you come upon some small town jewels. On a weekend road trip through southwest Wisconsin, I discovered the community of Darlington (population a little over 2,500).
This picturesque town serves as the county seat of Lafayette County with an imposing courthouse and historic downtown.
This is a view of Darlington’s downtown main street. When photographing during the ‘blue hour’ the window of opportunity is only a matter of minutes before the sky turns completely black and for some odd reason this is when people like to approach me and ask me what I’m doing (big digital SLR camera on a tripod? Hmm? I’m not exactly out here for an evening jog).
So while shooting with limited time on my hands, a very nice lady walked up to me and started up a conversation. I found out she was a born and raised in Darlington. When I told her I moved to Wisconsin from San Diego, California she replied, “Oh! One of those big city types! So how do you like Wisconsin?”
In my deadpan, sarcastic response I replied, “I’m from San Diego, California.” I wasn’t sure if she understood my sarcasm, but most people don’t anyway.
The little time I had to photograph this scene I did manage to get a decent shot. So good night for now from this big city type guy from small town Wisconsin.
